What Is the STAP Budget and Who Can Apply?

The STAP budget is designed for anyone who wants to improve their position in the Dutch labour market. Whether you’re currently employed, looking for a job, or on benefits, you may qualify if you can show a link to the Dutch labour market. You can apply for the STAP budget if you:

  • Work or live in the Netherlands.
  • Are employed by a Dutch company.
  • Receive unemployment or sickness benefits.

To qualify, you must:

  • Be between 18 years old and pension age (66).
  • Not receive an old age pension (AOW).
  • Hold an EU nationality (you or your partner).
  • Have Dutch insurance for at least six months in the past two years.
  • Not receive other educational grants like studiefinanciering.

How to Apply for the STAP Budget

Before starting your application, prepare two essential items: your DigiD and a STAP registration certificate (STAP-aanmeldingsbewijs) from your chosen training course. Without this certificate, you cannot complete your application.

Once ready, visit the official STAP website and log in with your DigiD here. Click the button “vraag STAP-budget aan” to begin.
During the process, you’ll need to provide details about your course and your employment situation. The UWV will handle the payment directly to your trainer if funds remain available.

Because the budget runs out quickly, apply as soon as the new window opens. The next period starts September 1 at 10:00 CET, so set a reminder to improve your chances.

How Much Budget Can You Receive?

The STAP budget covers up to €1,000 of your training costs. If the course costs more, you’ll need to pay the difference yourself. Luckily, employers can contribute as well, and these expenses are tax-deductible for businesses.

The Dutch Chamber of Commerce (KvK) also encourages companies to support staff development through STAP.

What Training Courses Qualify for the STAP Budget?

Many training providers registered with STAP now promote their approved courses. If you’re unsure where to start, visit the online training registry (in Dutch). The first pop-up asks your age, as some courses target specific age groups.

Then you can search by language (Taal) or upcoming start date (Scholing start in periode).

With so many training options available, the STAP budget gives you the perfect opportunity to invest in your growth and future career in the Netherlands.
