A well-established, independent non-profit foundation based in The Hague is seeking an experienced and visionary Director to lead its operations and guide its strategic direction.

In this role, you’ll provide day-to-day leadership to a small multicultural team, shape long-term strategy alongside the board, and represent the organisation across academic, cultural, and expatriate networks. This is a dynamic position combining strategic oversight, operational excellence, and external engagement.

This non-profit foundation is dedicated to preserving the life stories of individuals and families who have lived and worked abroad. It manages a unique archival collection that supports global research in fields like migration, cultural heritage, and international mobility.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Lead the daily operations of the organisation and supervise a multicultural team
  • Shape and implement the long-term strategy in coordination with the Board of Trustees
  • Oversee financial planning, reporting, and fundraising efforts
  • Build and maintain partnerships in academic, archival, and expatriate communities
  • Represent the organisation externally and grow its visibility and network
  • Coordinate academic outreach initiatives, including a research award
  • Ensure the accessibility, growth, and preservation of the archival collection
  • Lead internal and external communication efforts (e.g. newsletters, digital channels, PR)
  • Ensure compliance with Dutch non-profit regulations
  • Stay up to date with trends in archival management, digital tools, and global mobility research

What We’re Looking For

Experience & Background

  • 5+ years of experience in a senior role within a non-profit, cultural, academic, or archival organisation
  • A university degree in a relevant discipline (e.g. history, archival studies, international relations, or cultural heritage)
  • You must have the right to work in the EU. Applications from candidates without valid EU work authorisation cannot be considered.

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong strategic leadership and project management skills
  • Excellent team-building and communication abilities
  • Confident public speaker with a talent for external engagement
  • Fluency in English; good command of Dutch is preferred (additional languages are a plus)
  • Proficiency with digital platforms and non-profit tools
  • Understanding of Dutch non-profit governance (or willingness to learn quickly)
