HVDC R&D Expert

Have you led HVDC research, engineered high-voltage switchgear, and turned complex simulations into certified, grid-ready designs? Read on!

You will own R&D for next-gen HVDC systems and circuit breaker technology, validate SF6-free approaches, and turn models into tested prototypes with European partners. You will work closely with experts in interrupters and DC circuit breakers, align with certification bodies in Arnhem, and help shape the roadmap for a new European R&D centre.

Key responsibilities:

• Lead HVDC R&D across interrupters, DC circuit breakers, and GIS/AIS components.
• Develop and validate SF6-free solutions using O2/CO2 mixtures and C4-FN where applicable, translating results into design rules and test plans.
• Build and run multi-physics and power-system simulations for arc behaviour, transient performance, and reliability.
• Plan and execute lab testing with European facilities in Arnhem to meet IEC and related standards.
• Document findings, present recommendations, and support productization for 420 kV and above.
• Collaborate with Korea HQ and the Arnhem Centre Manager. Mentor early hires and contribute to building a 10-person local team over time.

Who we are looking for:
Must have

• MSc or PhD in Electrical Engineering or related field.
• Proven experience with HVDC systems and high-voltage switchgear or circuit breakers.
• Hands-on with arc-quenching technologies and SF6-free concepts for GIS.
• Strong modelling and simulation background (e.g., PSCAD, MATLAB/Simulink, COMSOL or similar).
• Familiarity with European testing and certification workflows. Fluent in English.

Good to have

• Experience taking HV/EHV hardware from concept to type test.
• Background working with KEMA/IEC environments in the Netherlands.
• Cross-cultural collaboration with Korea or wider APAC teams.
